INTERACTION FORCE AND MOMENT ON TWO PARALLEL SHIPS
This thesis deals with problem of ship to ship interactions when two ships are travelling on parallel courses in close proximity to each other. It compares the theory presented in the paper "Hydrodynamic Interactions Between Ships" by E.O. Tuck and J.N. Newman. The theory is calculated by curvefitting the sectional area curves for the two ships, and approximating the added-mass curve along the ship. Two approximations for the added-mass are used; first the added-mass is approximated at each section by an ellipse of arbitrary beam using the draft as the half major axis, second the added-mass is approximated by a rectangular section at each section. The results show good correlation to the experiments. It is noted that the results for the theory get better as the separation distance between the ships gets to be on the order of the length of the ship as opposed to the beam of the ship.
