DEMAND RESPONSIVE TRANSPORT SYSTEMS TASK FORCE (DRTS) STATUS REPORT

The work done and literature reviewed in developing a proposal for a Demand Responsive Transportation System (DRTS) is reported. The role of DRTS in urban transportation is discussed with reference to specific situations where DRTS is in operation. Scheduling and routing operations are discussed. Vehicle productivity is examined and figures of some systems in operation (all are manually scheduled) are presented. Studies indicate that vehicle with seating capacities of 10 to 20 are required, and examples of some bus types utilized in various demonstration projects are given. Communication between driver and scheduler is maintained via a radio-telephone. Coments are also made regarding patronage. System costs and revenues are discussed and costs developed by a MIT research team are tabulated. The observation is made that DRTS is a premium service that will not usually pay for itself from fare box revenues. This operationally and technically feasible system has, however, successfully provided social and personal benefits to the people served.
