TWO-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURAL DEFECT ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES
The techniques are outlined which are used in the preparation of data obtained from photographs of plane surface areas for the definition, quantification, and statistical assessment of geological features in rock exposures. The application of these techniques to structural defect surveys of underground openings is described. In this time-saving and relatively inexpensive process, the rock face can be marked and photographed in such a manner that the reduced photographs can be trimmed and connected lengthwise with the least amount of distortion. The structural details (distinguished by different colors) and the reference marks are traced from the photographs on to a transparent overlay. A straight- line replacement of joints, or the particular structure required is made, ensuring that reference marks and the correct orientation is preserved for each areas studied. The apparent length and angle to the horizontal (apparent dip) of the joints is measured, and a series of graph and historgrams can be compiled to enable the statistical analysis to be carried out. Details of the photographic techniques (useful in both underground situations and situations where survey of an extensive area is required) are outlined. The tracing of structural defects is described, and the measurement of joints and preparation for data reduction is detailed.
