EVALUATION OF CORROSION DAMAGE ON VEHICLES

From statistics obtained from the Bavarian Vehicles Inspection Association's computer it was able to be proved that, of 290,000 cars tested, depending on type and age up to 31.5 percent had an excessive amount of corrosion on important metal parts. A method therefore has to be found which would enable the examiner to evaluate this type of damage as correctly and as consistently as possible with respect to its effects on the safety of the vehicle. Two types of corrosion damage are dealt with: corrosion of the vehicle body and chassis and corrosion of the brake conduits. For the first group, which involves damage to supporting metal parts, an explanation is given of those parts which, if corroded, would have an effect on safety. The damaging effect of rust is then described. From this the importance of this damage is established in relation to the safety of the vehicle as a whole. A table of all parts which should be tested and evaluated is included as an aid to the examiner. So that the rust damage can be determined as accurately as possible, a method is described which is associated with the evaluation of the damage discovered. The whole operation from the establishment of the damage up to its evaluation is then described with the aid of four characteristic examples. A short summary of the problem of evaluating corroded hydraulic braking conduits is dedicated to the second main group. A later report is to be presented on the results of studies currently being undertaken at the Vehicle Inspection Centre in Bavaria.
