IMBALANCE AND METHODS OF ELIMINATING IT WITH REFERENCE TO ROAD SAFETY
UNWUCT UND METHODEN ZUR BESEITIGUNG IM HINBLICK AUF DIE VERKEHRSSICHERHEIT
There are two types of imbalance: static imbalance and the moment of imbalance, which in practice occur in combination. The first leads to jumping and the second to offsetting of the wheel. Both types have to be eliminated for the sake of road safety. For this purpose, only machines which are able to measure dynamically may be used, since the moment of imbalance can only be established during rotation. Effects which are similar to imbalance are caused by irregularities in the geometry of the wheel and non-uniformities in tyres. These are noticed during movement under load. These can be partially eliminated by matching, flexing and balancing. The number of counterbalancing revolutions on the machine has no effect on the quality of the counterbalancing. This number of revolutions is determined by the design of the machine and the method of measurement, and has no connection with the critical speed of the vehicle on the road. In order to carry out stationary counterbalancing and also balancing directly on the vehicle, more and more use is being made of centrifugal force measurement. To measure imbalance as part of periodic testing, an underfloor balancing rig is available. Testing on a rolling test rig would not be possible at the moment because of the difficulties involved.
