MOMENT TRANSFER TO COLUMNS IN SLABS WITH SHEARHEAD REINFORCEMENT
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of shearhead reinforcement to increase the strength of slabs at their connection to edge columns. The 1971 ACI Building Code (ACI 318-71) permits the use of such shearheads only at interior column locations. Results of tests on 14 slab-column specimens containing shearhead reinforcement and simulating conditions at an edge column in a flat plate structure are described. All specimens were made with lightweight aggregate concrete and Grade 60 high-strength reinforcement. The principle variables were the length and strength of the shearland arms. Two design methods for shearheads subjected to unbalanced moments at edge columns are presented. Modifications of the 1971 ACI Code to incorporate the simpler of these two methods are suggested.
