SWEDISH EXPERIMENTAL SAFETY VEHICLE PROGRAM. STEERABILITY DURING EMERGENCY BRAKING. SUMMARY REPORT

This report summarises the results from eleven other reports (VTIN 16001e to VTIN 16004e, and VTIN 18002e to 18008e). It also comprises the results of some complementary tests to investigate the proposed test procedure and check vehicle stability after modification of the anti-lock system. The project was divided into the following tasks, viz. Skid accident analysis, performance tests, statistical tests, simulation, and measurements of tyre-road characteristics. If consideration is given to the drivers attempt to steer during the accidents investigated, and if the vehicles were steerable during emergency braking, 4 to 7.5 per cent of all traffic accidents involving passenger cars could be avoided or reduced. Test procedures and test conditions for steerability during emergency braking are proposed. Recommendations are given regarding stability, steerability, and brakeability of vehicles in the 1000 to 1500 kilograms class, based on the results from field tests and simulations. Copies of all reports can be obtained from the Swedish road safety office, fack, s-171 20 solna 1, Sweden. See also IRRD nos. 210523-210526 and 212441-212447. /TRRL/
