SWEDISH EXPERIMENTAL SAFETY VEHICLE PROGRAM. STEERABILITY DURING EMERGENCY BRAKING. SIMULATION. LOW-FRICTION. HIGH FRICTION
Simulations have been performed with a mathematical model implemented on a hybrid computer. The model describes the movements during emergency maneuvers with combined steering and braking of passenger cars equipped with anti-lock braking systems. Much attention has been paid to the validation of the model. The only vehicle parameters of major importance for vehicle stability, steerability or brakeability during drastic steering and braking maneuvers are found to be vehicle mass and mass distribution, whereas most parameters in the vehicle braking system and in the anti-lock system are important, as are the tyre-road combination, the vehicle initial velocity and the driver's action. The anti-lock system, braking system and vehicle must be matched together that the slip levels are well controlled for good stability. It is found possible to design realistic systems with performance fairly close to the theoretical limits. /TRRL/
