PROBLEMS IN THE OPERATION OF BIKEWAYS

This paper discusses solutions to operational problems encountered by the Oregon State Highway Division in building and maintaining bikeways since 1971. Signing, striping, and pavement and stencils are used for designation and delineation of bikeways. Redesign of storm sewer grates, curb ramps placed at center of the curb return to prevent hazard to blind pedestrians, and replacement of chain-link fence by tubular fencing, are some of the ways in which hazards are reduced. A new type of push-button mounting for button-activated traffic controllers aids in transition between different classes of bikeways.
