TRANSPORTATION AND TRAFFIC ENGINEERING HANDBOOK

A broadening of the role and responsibility of the Traffic Engineer has taken place since the 1965 edition of the Handbook. The traffic engineer has become of necessity a "transportation" engineer whose primary goal is achieving "balanced transportation". This edition of the Handbook reflects this change by the expansion of its scope. Emphasis is placed on the major elements of total transportation planning, particularly as they relate to traffic engineering. First, the Handbook updates essential facts about the vehicle, the highway, the driver, and all matters related to these three principal concerns of the traffic engineer. But, more important, it also discusses characteristics of the other modes of transportation in Chapters 5, 6, 12, 13, 21, 22, and 23. Other principal new chapters include Computer Applications (Chapter 11); Statewide and Regional Transportation Planning (Chapter 11); Statewide and Regional (Chapter 19); Environmental Considerations (Chapter 21); and Applications of Systems Concepts (Chapter 23).
