REVERTEX IN BITUMINOUS MIXES
The properties of rubberised bitumen are briefly described and the techniques used for adding rubber latex to bituminous mixes are outlined. LCS Revertex, a natural rubber latex concentrated by evaporation to 68 percent solids and stabilized with potassium hydroxide and soap, may be added directly to the hot, bitumen-coated stones and other fillers in the ougmill. To facilitate the addition of LCS Revertex to the mix, equipment has been developed in which a displacement pump will deliver a regulated amount of latex to the mix. Improvement which can be obtained by adding a small amount of LCS Revertex to bitumen include an increase in softening point, a decrease in brittle point, greater elasticity, resilience, toughness, adhesion and flesibility, and a decrease in penetration value at elevated temperatures. Rolled asphalt mixes may be rubberised in the manner described for bitumen macadams, and rubberised cut-back bitumen may be made either by cutting back a previously rubberised penetration grade bitumen, or by rubberising a cut-back oil which has been mixed with a portion of penetration grade bitumen. For surface dressing applications it is usual to add 3/4-1 percent dry weight of LCS Revertex at a spraying temperature of 150-16- deg. C.
