BEHAVIOR OF SOLID SKEW SLAB BRIDGES UNDER LONGITUDINAL PRESTRESS
This report considers two distinct methods of analysing skew solid slab bridges subject to longitudinal prestress. Both methods separate the axial and bending components of the prestress and sum the final effects. Two 1/8-scale microconcrete, solid slab models with different width to span ratios have been constructed and tested under the application of longitudinal prestress and live loadings. The results of strain readings taken on both surfaces of the decks are compared with the analytical results. Particular attention has been given to the measurement of reactions in this work, since it is desirable to know whether the deck will tend to lift from any of the hearing pads during the stressing operation. It is shown that in certain cases it is possible that up to 90% of the bending component of the longitudinal prestress may be dispersed as transverse bending stresses and torsional stresses. Finally, a suggested procedure for the design of prestressed solid slab bridges, including the proportioning of the untensioned reinforcement, is presented. This method was used for the design of the models which performed adequately up to ultimate load.
