EVALUATION OF THE DRUM MIXING PROCESS IN MAINE
During the summer of 1974, a study was conducted to evaluate drum mixer, the process, and the product. Emulsified asphalt rather than asphalt cement was used exclusively; therefore, direct comparison with similar type studies were limited. The results of this study indicated that a reasonably uniform product could be obtained if an effort was made to construct uniform stockpiles. A study of moisture content at various points in the process indicated that the burner removes stockpile moisture plus water in the emulsion to approximately 0.7 percent. Aeriation and additional evaporation eventually reduces the moisture content to approximately 0.5 percent when it is placed on the roadway. At no time was moisture in the mixture considered deterimental to handling and placing. Although a direct comparison could not be made, a study of the bitumen properties at various stages failed to prove or disprove the effects of the burner flame to oxidation of the bitumen.
