THE N.S. SAVANNAH DESIGN

An historical account of the conception and design of the N.S. Savannah as an instrument of international goodwill and a proving ground for the peaceful use of atomic energy. The ship was designed and developed under a joint board from the Maritime Administration and the Atomic Energy Commission. The shipbuilding contract was awarded by this group to the New York Shipbuilding Corporation and the contract for the nuclear reactor was awarded to Babcock & Wilcox Company. Inherent in all the design effort has ban a very conservative attitude toward safety. The reasoning for the design even to minute details is very carefully documented as a guide for future designers.
