TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS OF JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH

Travel characteristics of junior and senior high school students in Dutchess County (Poughkeepsie), New York are analyzed using the results of a survey of students in the County. A total of 40 randomly selected homerooms, including at least one in every school district, were surveyed and over 900 completed questionnaires were used in the analysis. The influence of family size, auto ownership, and school grade and sex on trip rates, mode choice and trip purpose are examined in detail as are the effects of trip purpose on frequency and mode choice. Results indicated that (1) trip rates are affected by grade, sex and auto aownership, but are similar for travel on weekdays and Saturdays? (2) lack of available transportation is the major reason that desired trips are not made; and (3) a high percentage of students did not make certain trips because they were "too busy." /Author/
