TESTS OF JOINTS FOR CONCRETE PAVEMENTS
Concrete beams incorporating joints simulating those in concrete pavements were tested statically and larger specimens tested repetitively to explore various current and innovative concepts for load transfer. Results from tests on closed joints of the type used to reduce warping stresses indicated that performance is closely related to the tie steel; that interlocking aggregate or molded keys are advantageous; that sharp key fillets should be avoided; and that multiple keys are detrimental. Conventional dowels provided load transfer as good as any other device tested. Repetitive load test data generally rated performance in the same order as the static tests and also demonstrated the advantages of a cement-treated subbase in improving joint performance.
