NS SAVANNAH CONTAINMENT INTEGRITY, ITS MEASUREMENT AND IMPROVEMENT

Measures taken in a program to test and improve both containment integrity and the means of measuring it are discussed. Basically, the program was twofold. First, the scope of testing was enlarged and improved methods were devised to provide more meaningful data. Second, physical changes were sought that would either improve the containment integrity or facilitate testing. An introductory section reports on precautionary measures originally taken aboard the N.S. Savannah to minimize the possibility of radioactivity release to the atmosphere and includes schematics of the reactor compartment ventilation system, containment penetrations, and types of containment penetrations. Detailed results of the current program and plans for continuing it are presented at the report's conclusion.
