MOTORCYCLE HANDLING AND COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ANATOMY OF A TURN

The single track vehicle has a special requirement for "out-tracking" to enter a turn and then later "in-tracking" to recover from a turn. This is a feature which is rarely mentioned in motorcycle training or driver education. The out-tracking required to enter a turn has serious implications in the success of a collision avoidance maneuver. Experiments show that lack of training and unfamiliarity with this phenomenon reduces the ability to avoid collisions. Motorcycle rider education should include coverage of this topic.
