NEAR - TERM EXPERIMENTAL MOTORCYCLE PROGRAM
For the first time, motorcycles will be designed, fabricated, and tested with safety as the primary requirement. The principle objectives of this far-reaching program are: (1) demonstrate the feasibility and performance of new safety features as forerunners to regulations requiring similar safety performance for mass-production vehicles sold to the public; (2) utilize a systems engineering approach to design safety into a vehicle as a whole rather than as piecemeal "add-ons"; (3) stimulate the development of new technology in vehicle safety, and (4) promote international cooperation in developing and sharing the new technology on a continuing basis as rapidly as it develops to reflect worldwide safety needs and research experience. The overall goal is to design and fabricate complete vehicles that meet or exceed a number of specified performance requirements. This paper describes the initial effort toward specification of these performance requirements. /Author/
