STRENGTH AND SERVICEABILITY OF INVERTED T-BEAM CAPS SUBJECT TO COMBINED FLEXURE, SHEAR, AND TORSION
Bent cap girders in the shape of an inverted T have been used with considerable success, particularly in structures at grade separations. Observations from 27 load tests on seven specimens, four of which were prestressed, indicated that the present American Concrete Institute and National Building Code of Canada procedures for assigning strength in flexural shear and torsion underestimated torsion strength by 50 percent. The tests also showed that prestressed concrete members exhibited under service loads less cracking and lower stresses in transverse reinforcement than did nonprestressed members with identical proportions. Recommended design procedures and equations for assessing strength were proposed. The recommendations can be applied for the design of transverse reinforcement in prestressed or nonprestressed beams.
