MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ICE AND THEIR APPLICATION TO ARCTIC ICE PLATFORMS
Natural ice has a number of unusual properties which make it a unique material. Some of these properties, e.g., high homologous temperature, crystallographic structure, and grain structure, are discussed and the manner in which they influence the strength and deformation behavior of ice is considered. The analytical techniques required to describe the load-bearing performance of a floating ice cover are still being developed. Some of the factors that must be considered in the development of these techniques are illustrated by describing an ice platform that was constructed on sea ice in the high Arctic. The ice platform was used to support an offshore exploratory drilling operation that extended over a period of two months.
