INJURY ASSESSMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC ACCIDENT DATA

The value of assessing collision-induced injury from international traffic accident data is discussed in this paper. Examples of results to be expected from analyses of the common data are presented. Emphasis is placed on injury causation and prevention. The data were derived from 520 accident cases prepared by 33 participating teams from nine countries in Europe and North America. The data file contains 520 vehicles and 916 occupants of which 79 percent received crash related injuries. Fatal injuries were incurred by 6.8 percent of the occupants. This paper focuses on the feasibility of collecting international data and conducting such analyses, and not on the characteristics of the results obtained from this small sample. The significance of international traffic accident data and its utility to designers and regulatory agencies depends largely upon the manner in which the data are compared. Occupant injury is discussed in relation to exterior and interior vehicle damage, use of the restraint system by occupants, occupant ejection, occupant seat position, accident configuration, etc. The constraints on these results are also presented.
