GULLY GRATES AND BICYCLE SAFETY . NATIONAL TRANSPORT CONFERENCE; TRANSPORT FOR THE USERS; MELBOURNE, 23-25 MAY 1989; PREPRINT OF PAPERS

Despite the growth in motor vehicle traffic and the lengthening of duration of peak flows (particularly for the journey to and from work), the use of bicycles by serious commuters has persisted. Other road users, including those restricted to wheelchairs, have vehicles whose speed and wheel characteristics are similar to those of bicyclists. This paper reviews the bicycle safety of gully grates, and presents a proposed definition of the term bicycle safety as applied to grates, which was evolved during a recent internal study by the New South Wales department of main roads. This is believed to be the first precise definition of bicycle safety introduced, and would enable grate manufacturers to introduce new grate designs of any type, subject only to the performance requirement. The needs of the bicyclist may in this case be met without any compromise in respect of hydraulic efficiency, provided certain general principles are observed (a).
