USER PROFILE OF PARKING STATIONS IN SYDNEY . NATIONAL TRANSPORT CONFERENCE; TRANSPORT FOR THE USERS; MELBOURNE, 23-25 MAY 1989; PREPRINT OF PAPERS

Parking stations are licenced facilities to accommodate parked vehicles for a fee. Their location, position and size of driveways, and market of long versus short stay parking, have a marked operational impact of adjacent streets and intersections. In central Sydney, there are 50 such parking stations providing about 13,000 off street parking spaces. The supply is about to increase by more than 50 per cent if all the proposals before the government are built. In order to properly assess the impact of an increase in parking supply on the traffic system, detailed investigations were made of present users of parking stations. The profiles of the existing users of parking stations indicate that the traffic impacts of parking stations are influenced by the location and use in response to pricing policy. There is also a discussion of council's extensive role in parking stations. Improved impact assessment ability should assist council in any future decisions on the construction of public parking stations (a). For the covering record of the conference, see IRRD no 814837.
