THE USE OF SELF ADMINISTERED QUESTIONNAIRES TO IDENTIFY RESIDENTS' TRAFFIC PROBLEMS . NATIONAL TRANSPORT CONFERENCE; TRANSPORT FOR THE USERS; MELBOURNE, 23-25 MAY 1989; PREPRINT OF PAPERS

In 1987 the road traffic authority (rta) commenced two major traffic management studies for which public consultation was considered essential for public acceptance and the ultimate success of the studies. A self administered mail back questionnaire survey was selected as the most appropriate method of facilitating community input at the issue identification stage of the studies. Questions were designed to enable residents to input their views on existing traffic problems and suggestions for improvements. The questionnaire forms were designed to enable completed questionnaires to be folded, sealed and mailed (postage free) back to the rta. Returned questionnaires were manually coded and entered into a computer database for analysis. From the tabulated results, major traffic problems were identified and earmarked for further investigation. This paper reviews the use of self administered mail back questionnaire surveys by the rta. Problems which occurred during the two traffic studies are discussed and suggestions for the design and conduct of future questionnaire surveys are made (a). For the covering record of the conference, see IRRD no 814837.
