STRATEGISCH VERKEERS- EN VERVOERSONDERZOEK

It has been emphasized in several recent publications that research in the Netherlands in the field of transport and mobility is lacking in strategic value. Although a lot of research is being done, sometimes of high quality, most of it is of an ad hoc nature. Furthermore little attention is given to the work of integrating the results of various research projects, and the longer term changes in transport and mobility systems are often neglected. The ministry of education and science has taken the initiative of forming the 'kerngroep infrastructuur, transport & logistiek', whose main task is formulating a research programme for the longer term, to overcome the problems mentioned above. The 'kerngroep' focuses its attention on questions of transport and infrastructure, as far as they are related to developments of an economic or environmental nature, and having spatial implications. The activities of the 'kerngroep' constitute part of a nationwide initiative, aiming at a more structural way of planning and coordinating the research effort in the whole field of transport and mobility, including also the more technical research. With the aim of structuring the large field of knowledge the 'kerngroep' has to give attention to five so called 'centrale onderzoeks velden' (cov) which have been idenfified. This paper only describes the second of these, called 'technological development and mobility'.
