VERKEERSPLANNING IN DE LANDELIJKE GEBIEDEN: AFSTEMMING VAN WEGENNETTEN VAN HOGERE EN LAGERE ORDE

An elaborated method has been developed for area wide and integrated traffic planning for both major and minor rural roads. The main issue is the transfer of rat run traffic from the minor road network to the major roads surrounding it. A grassland area near wageningen (Netherlands) serves as an example area. First, traffic flow changes resulting from the proposed measures were determined for the relevant road sections. From this, the effects upon traffic performance, travel times, road safety, energy consumption and traffic noise were quantified. The measures against rat run traffic inside the area cause slight increases in total traffic performance, travel time, road accidents and energy consumption as well as a slight decrease in traffic noise. The method proves an adequate tool for rural road plan evaluation. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 825702.
