DURABILITY EXPERIENCE IN THE NETHERLANDS 1958-1988. DURABILITY AND AGING OF GEOSYNTHETICS. PAPERS PRESENTED AT A SEMINAR HELD AT THE GEOSYNTHETIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE, DREXEL UNIVERSITY, PHILADELPHIA, DECEMBER 8-9 1988
This paper considers the main environmental degradation mechanisms of the geotextile materials Pa (polyamide or nylon), pe (polyethylene), pet (polyethylene terephthalate) and pp (polypropylene). These include: photodegradation; thermo oxidation; hydrolysis; and both chemical and biological degradation. A survey is also provided of the principle durability studies carried out in the Netherlands over the last 30 years. These include: (a) an investigation into the strength of Pa, pet and pp 24 mm ropes over a 3 year period; (b) a 3 year investigation of the retained strength of Pa, Pa black and pet yarns both behind glass and outdoors, to investigate the effects of ultraviolet light; (c) the effect of thermo oxidation upon pp fabrics; (d) a field evaluation of Pa, pe and pp woven fabrics used as geosynthetic filters after 8-15 years of service; (E) hydraulic degradation of pet, and (f) the biodegradation of Pa and pet by keeping the woven fabrics on an agar-agar substratum with a mixture of ascomycetes and fungi imperfecti for 3 months.
