EFFECTIVE ESTABLISHMENT OF VEGETATION FOR EROSION CONTROL. PROCEEDINGS OF A SYMPOSIUM ON SOIL EROSION AND ITS CONTROL, REGENTS COLLEGE, REGENT'S PARK, LONDON, APRIL 21, 1989

The object of this paper is to outline some of the methods and the materials used in restoring and controlling erosion of subsoils. Two main methods are available: (a) the incorporation of seed and associated materials using conventional agricultural methods, i.e. Cultivation, broadcasting, sowing seed and spraying. Such a method can be used on land that is sufficiently flat to operate on safely and on types of subsoil suitable for cultivation; and (b) hydraulic seeding, which is a method designed to mix various materials with water and spray them on areas that are either inaccessible to conventional equipment or on ground that cannot be cultivated. The types of basic specification used are described briefly, as are the types of mulches, soil ameliorates, fertilisers and binders available. Advice about choosing the most appropriate seed mix and application rate is also provided. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 824252.
