FINITE ELEMENT MODELLING OF A STRUTTED EXCAVATION. NUMERICAL MODELS IN GEOMECHANICS. NUMOG III. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM HELD IN NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA, 8-11 MAY 1989
Excavations in build-up areas require reliable support systems to prevent collapse and limit adjacent ground movement. In this study, the results of finite element analyses using the program crisp were compared with those obtained from an instrumented, strutted, sheet piled excavation. The computed lateral sheet pile wall displacement profile is similar in trend to the measured profiles. Comparison of numerical quantities shows that the analyses under-predict maximum lateral sheet pile wall displacement and strut loads and over-predict toe movement and base heave. The effects of variations in marine clay properties, strut stiffness and sheet pile wall stiffness on the computed results were also studied.(a) for the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD 824029.
