RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN SHIPBOARD STEERING SYSTEMS
Developments in shipboard steering systems are akin to developments in any highly specialized area, because all new ideas come either from a revolutionary new discovery or from an evolution and refinement of proved techniques and hardware. Subtle changes in existing hardware and techniques more often bring an industry to its current state, as has been the case in advances in steering gear during the last few years. New concepts currently being studied may produce a mild revolution in this decade. At the conclusion of the technical aspect of this paper, a brief report is given on the U.S. Maritime Administration- funded program that Sperry Marine Systems is currently pursuing to investigate the feasibility of realizing full automation and self-adaption of the steering function for large, high-speed vessels.
