MODEL TESTS OF AN ARCTIC SEV OVER MODEL ICE
The model testing program of a surface effect vehicle (SEV) over model ice consisted of two parts--resistance tests and bearing capacity tests. The objective of the first part was to determine the resistance of SEV operating over ice covered water. Test results presented in the paper show a peak in the resistance curve occurring at velocities near the critical velocity of flexural waves in the ice sheet. This critical velocity is determined by the thickness and the elastic modulus of the ice. The objective of the second part of the model testing was to determine the bearing capacity of the ice as a function of the size and shape of the landing pads and as a function of the thickness and material properties of the ice. The results of these tests provide a means to predict the thickness of ice required to support SEV while parked.
