VARIATION OF SHIP/ICE PARAMETERS ON SHIP RESISTANCE TO CONTINUOUS MOTION IN ICE
Over the years, many semi-empirical and analytical expressions have been developed to describe ship resistance to continuous motion in solid ice. In general, each of them has failed to give the ship designer any real qualitative appreciation of the effect of variation in ship and ice parameters on this resistance, and consequently were of limited value as a predictive design tool. This paper attempts to discuss the predictive capability of an analytical model for predicting ship resistance in solid ice which was developed by the author. In addition, it presents the results of a systematic variation of those various ship and ice parameters which effect this resistance in ice. Trend results due to variation of these parameters are developed and presented in graphical form so as to aid the ship designer appreciate their significance and influence on the total ship resistance in ice.
