GIVE WAY: A REPORT ON CYCLING IN BRITAIN

This report describes the potential for cycling in Great Britain. It notes the predominance of the car in transport planning and the neglect of the bicycle during most of the 1960's. Statistics on car ownership and cycle ownership and use are included. Influences on modal choice are examined: speed, cost, comfort, health, safety, and energy and space usage are compared for various modes of travel. Ideal requirements for cycling provision are discussed along with more practical possibilities. There is a comparison of several different types of facility and it is concluded that the cycle priority route has the most potential value. Several schemes are described briefly, particularly the proposals for Lambeth. Cycle parking and legal problems are also dealt with. Appendices include results from other studies, design standards, and local authority attitudes to cycling. /TRRL/
