PERCEPTION OF A TRAFFIC SIGN AND DRIVING SPEED
Details are given of a test designed to measure drivers' perception of traffic signs. A 30km/h speed limit sign was positioned on the side of a suburban road. The site was selected according to traffic concentration, road layout and ease of measurement. The speed of vehicles was recorded with a hidden radar device before they entered the speed limit zone and after passing the speed limit sign. Out of 421 drivers. 53.4% perceived the sign, 46.6% failed to do so. The average speed in the speed limit zone for the drivers who perceived the sign was 50 km/h; it was 60.9 km/h for those who did not. No significant relation, was found between perception and drivers' age, sex, driving experience or professional status. 69% of the drivers perceived the sign when they were alone in their car, only 52% did so if other occupants were inside the vehicle.
