STABILITY OF UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES SUPPORT AND LINING
LA STABILITE DES OUVRAGES SOUTERRAINS - SOUTENEMENT ET REVETEMENT
Three main difficulties can arise during the analysis of the stability of underground structures and the calculation of the support: (1) rock and soil stress/strain laws are not sufficiently known, especially beyond failure point; (2) it is difficult to know the initial state of stress and deformation in a mass; (3) the analysis of the stresses imposed on the support is a statically indeterminate problem where the support drilling and laying technique must be taken into account. The first part of the report deals with the stability of unlined underground structures in plane deformation and at the rock face according to different laws of rock behaviour. Special attention is given to flows towards underground structures. In part two, an analysis of the support is presented. A distinction is made between the support during excavation and the long-term stress due to the differed behaviour of the terrain: during excavation, the support must be calculated based on the measurements and analysis of deformations taking place behind the face the influence of the stiffness of the lining as regards the deformability characteristics of the rock around the tunnel is stressed. Since the differed behaviour of the rock is not sufficiently known, the long-term study of applied stresses on the lining should be based on laboratory investigations and on numerous in-situ measurements. Details are given of the most commonly types of support for varying in nature. /TRRL/
