THE FUTURE OF WASHINGTON'S AIRPORTS

Presented here are the findings which have emerged from the two year process of planning for the air transportation needs of the Washington Metropolitan area, and the highlights of some substantial technical analyses. The study examined numerous future Washington-Baltimore alternative air carrier airport systems encompassing a broad range of policy options from the highly expansionary to the highly restrictive. Four alternatives are detailed. The concept of three of the four alternatives is to limit aviation activity at Washington National as a means of reducing unacceptable levels of air pollution and noise, while recognizing that it is a convenient airport providing essential transportation services. Within this overall concept further recommendations support Master Plans at all three airports (Baltimore-Washington, Dulles, Washington National) to guide necessary terminal facility exapnsions.
