GETTING SAVINGS OUT OF THE MIX
This article describes the West German wirtgen 4500 remix-plus machine, a combined recycler and paver unit that is claimed to achieve substantial savings on road resurfacing. This machine re-uses the existing wearing course of the road and adds new ingredients in a process that is said to produce savings of between 15% and 30% on traditional resurfacing methods. Wirtgen's hydrostatically controlled system, which can handle lane widths of 3.0 m to 4.5 m, has been tested by the Danish surfacing specialist inreco on the major e3 route in Denmark. Wirtgen's system remixes the existing pavement surface to create a foundation for a thin capping layer of virgin asphalt. (TRRL)
