ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN RIYADH. ANALYSIS OF CHARACTERISTICS AND REMEDIES

This article presented the results of a two year study of road traffic accidents in central riyadh, an area of approximately 9 square km. Accident statistics were broken down into accident type and any one of the following categories: driver characteristics (age, nationality, and whether licenced to drive or not); number of vehicles involved, vehicle classification; accident location; and time of day or month at which the accident occurred. A total of 1754 accidents occurred. The total number of drivers involved was 3241, and of these, 1200 (nearly 40%) did not hold driving licences. Over 25% of all fatal accidents occurred on Thursday (the first day of the weekend). Fatalities peaked during the month of ramadhan. Accidents causing injuries or property damage were evenly distributed throughout the year. Recommendations to improve the situation included stricter licence control and monitoring, stricter speed limit enforcement at weekends, the construction of well lit underpasses for pedestrians and the identification of hazards on roadways.
