PROMOTION OF TRAFFIC SAFETY ON STATE HIGHWAYS . CONFERENCE PAPERS ON THE WORKING DAYS ON TRAFFIC ENGINEERING 1989

One of the objectives in the recent Dutch five years' program on traffic safety is to reduce by 25% the number of traffic victims. In this paper a description is given about the way in which the Rijkswaterstaat tries to realize this objective. Within this context influencing traffic behaviour will play a dominant role. Conditions are favourable since regional teams for promoting traffic safety (the so called ROV's) were established and the division of traffic safety of the Ministry of Transport was integrated in the Rijkswaterstaatsorganization. This enabled the erection of traffic safety units in the various rijkswterstaatdistricts. In a close cooperation a framework can be developed now to study the pattern of human behaviour in relation to traffic and to underline the importance of traffic safety for all persons who are concerned about the traffic safety on estate roads.
