A REGIONAL RAILWAY SYSTEM IN THE RANDSTAD . CONFERENCE PAPERS ON THE WORKING DAYS ON TRAFFIC ENGINEERING 1989

SNELTRAMS IN DE RANDSTAD

The southern part of the Randstad is highly urbanized. The region between Rotterdam and The Hague will be transformed from rural to suburban within the next 30 years. A regional railway system is needed to prevent congestion caused by car traffic. The present railway lines end at the central stations. When these lines penetrate deeper into the urban area, the modal split will shift to transit. Plans are being developed to realize this. An important topic in the discussions is the quality of the system: should it be metro-like right away, or tram like at the start, with the built in possibility of gradually transforming it into a heavier system.
