STEELWORKS SLAG ROAD PAVEMENT TEST SECTIONS

A number of steelworks slag base and surfacing test sections have been constructed in a test road on the approaches to a new weighbridge at bhp rod and bar products division works at newcastle. The test sections comprise 300 mm thick basecourses of blast furnace slag (bfs), basic oxygen furnace steel slag (bos) and several stabilised grave laitier type mixtures of these slags bound with granulated slag and flyash. A section of high quality natural fine crushed rock (dacite) is being used as a control. Surfacing comprises 35 mm thickness of asphalt with the three principal coarse aggregates bfs, bos and dacite again used. Traffic volume is up to 1000 heavy vehicles per day and each vehicle is being weighed. The performance of the test sections by measurement of surface deformation and Benkelman beam rebound deflection is being monitored over a period of several years against esa derived from the weighbridge loads. Descriptions of the materials used, construction of the test sections and findings after 12 months trafficking and approximately 8 x 10**5 esa are reported. (Author/TRRL)
