LINKING DEVON'S SCENERY

This article describes the construction of the North devon link road stage 2a, consisting of 24.3 km of single carriageway road, driven through rolling, changing countryside of great natural beauty, including some of the most attractive views in England. The contract was awarded to tarmac in 1983, after a public enquiry and the submission of detailed designs. The road has 16 major structures, including river crossings, overbridges and underbridges, all of which had to blend their alignment and structural form into the landscape, while overcoming technical on-site problems. Some examples are given of the special measures taken to protect areas of great environmental sensitivity. The road is the longest road in England built to highway link design; thus it has long stretches that are straight or nearly straight, together with substantial crawler lanes and road markings that clearly indicate where overtaking is safe and where it is hazardous. Its designers were able to produce significant cost savings by adopting this new design concept without reducing the level of service. Work began on 30 March 1987, and the road was opened on 1 novermber 1988, over 6 months ahead of schedule.
