ROLLING OUT THE WHEELS

This article describes the greater Nottingham cycle route network (gncrn), a 60 km cycle route network being sponsored and developed on the initiative of nottinghamshire county council, England. The idea for this project arose from the Department of Transport's (dtp's) cycling consultation paper, issued in 1982, which invited local authorities to submit a major scheme for inclusion in a large scale research project. The research aimed to investigate the following effects of the scheme: (1) changes in overall demand for cycling; (2) changes in cyclists' routes and journey times; (3) changes in cyclists' accident rates; (4) changes in attitudes to cycling; (5) any direct effects of the scheme on other transport modes. In 1984, the dtp announced that nottingham's bid for inclusion in the research project had been successful. The nottinghamshire network was designed to meet the following objectives: (1) it should include most already relatively heavily cycled areas in its locality; (2) it should provide safe, attractive and convenient links between the major generators and attractors of cycle journeys; (3) it should include those junctions and lengths of road where accidents involving cyclists are most frequent. The end of the article details the configuration of the network, the results obtained and the data collected. The project was due to be completed at the end of 1989, and its results will be monitored by the transport and Road Research Laboratory following the main 'after' study in March 1990.
