GEORDIES IN TOP GEAR
This article reports on newcastle city council's preparations for its 20 million West central route road scheme to revitalise part of newcastle-upon-tyne, England, and redirect its cross-tyne and cross-city traffic flows. The council has attempted to adopt the best ideas of the past and to develop a more robust and workable highway solution. When this article was written, the scheme had obtained provisional acceptance from the Department of Transport (dtp). A dual two-lane boulevard will be built, which will be arched by trees planted in the 5.5 m wide central reservation, friendly to pedestrians and encouraging to motorists; it will have no flyovers and only a short length of cutting. The new highway will provide an attractive 'gateway' to the West of the city; it will eliminate the present 'rat runs' but not interfere with existing road patterns. New roundabouts with improved design will be built at each end. The new road will help to regenerate a run-down part of the city; it will also relieve congestion on the tyne bridge and enable the redheugh bridge over the tyne to be used more effectively.
