LIGHT RAIL FOR SOUTH HAMPSHIRE
In this article, the possibility of a light rail transit (lrt) system in hampshire is discussed, following the publication of the final report of the pre-feasibility study on lrt in South hampshire, undertaken by the mva consultancy for hampshire county council. Two schemes are under consideration: (1) fareham to Portsmouth via gosport; and (2) southsea to cosham via Portsmouth. The proposed alignments and design of the routes are described, and relative costs given. The fareham to Portsmouth scheme is likely at this stage to be successful. Three major requirements are (i) the active involvement and support of local district councils; (II) the co-operation of the ministry of defence, over site location, as a land owner; and (III) the availability of some private finance.
