NATURAL RUBBER IN ROAD SURFACINGS
Rubberized road surfacings have a longer service life under normal conditions, and show to special advantages in tough conditions such as those encountered at bus stops, roundabouts, shifting foundations, air strips, and in tropical and arctic conditions. Research on rubberised road materials, which has included the laying of numerous full-scale road experiments, has shown that in surface- dressing, rubber prevents fatting-up in hot weather under heavy traffic, and eliminates rolled asphalt cracking. Improvement of 30 to 50 percent in the life of bitumen Macadam open-textured carpets has been noted when rubber was used. The physical and mechanical properties of rubber-bitumen are outlined, the preparation of rubber bitumen is described, and details are given of rubber in surface dressing, in mastic asphalt, in bituminous premix surfacings, and in bituminous emulsion. Rubberised tar, rubber for bridge surfacings, storage and costs are also discussed.
