FURTHER EXTENSIONS TO THE BISHOP & MORGENSTERN SLOPE STABILITY CHARTS
This paper extends the Bishop & morgenstern and o'connor & Mitchell charts for the effective stability analysis of slopes to slopes of horizontal:vertical inclination 0.5:1 and values of the dimensionless stability factor up to 0.15. This extension allows charts to be used to analyse steep slopes in homogeneous soft rocks including chalk and maris. The present results are shown to agree with those of the earlier work, which are included here for completeness. The paper's tables give values of the stability parameters m and n for slopes for inclinations 0.5:1, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 5:1, for values of the stability factor c'/gamma h between 0 and 0.15, and for values of phi between 20 and 40 degrees, where c' and phi are the effective stress strength parameters, gamma is the unit weight of the soil, h is the vertical height of the slope, and ru is the pore pressure parameter. The tables can be used to calculate the factor of safety of the slope f, given by the equation f = m -N ru. Charts are also available for use with this technique, but they are not presented here. The paper ends with a worked numerical example.
