DRAINOCHAPE - SPECIAL BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

DRAINOCHAPE

This report describes the drainochape bituminous mixture produced by the Paris firm beugnet. Drainochape is a 4 cm thick hot-coated pervious macadam, whose binder, flexochape e, is modified by the addition of fine selected rubber powder and manufactured on site. Drainochape is a special non-skid surfacing designed especially for motorways, expressways and urban roads with heavy traffic, where safety problems arise during wet weather. It has the following advantages: (1) no water on the carriageway; (2) no water spray and no aquaplaning phenomena; (3) very good adhesion in all weathers; (4) low-glare surface at night in wet weather; (5) marked improvement in rolling noise level, 3 db (a) less than for traditional bituminous mixtures. It can be used for surface maintenance or as a remedial course in preventive or remedial structural maintenance; it can also be applied to new pavements for any level of traffic, as long as the support layer is kept watertight. The report gives extensive details of tests carried out on the material, and also specifies: (1) ingredients; (2) mix design; (3) special aspects of manufacture and laying; (4) mechanical characteristics; (5) on-site behaviour; (6) stage of development; (7) costs; (8) test sites.
