SOPHISTICATED SIMPLICITY IN CASTING NEW-STYLE 'BLOCS'
Tric blocs for a motorway median barrier contract in auckland are being manufactured by angus precast Ltd at wiri, a short distance from the site. Of Swedish design, tric blocs incorporate reinforcement and connecting hardware, they are being used in conjunction with New Jersey barriers and diagrams are given to illustrate the dimensions of each type. Casting uses moulds made by nepean engineering Ltd and produces 20 standard tric blocs a day. A three-man team begins work at 6 am by cleaning the moulds and pouring 40 mpa concrete at 9.30. The moulds are steam injected for 3 to 4 hours then stripped at 2 pm and the process repeated using 25 mpa concrete. Split blocks are also fabricated for transitions around bridge abutments, etc. On site a pipe is dropped down in the slot between two abutting blocks encapsulating the bottom cranked pins and bolted in place with a connecting plate. The Swedish designers of the block say that it offers the impact strength of a concrete barrier, the energy absorption of a metal barrier and crash performance better than both.
